Polite Prorsum

Having recently started working for British luxury brand Burberry I feel I am honour bound to promote their latest Prorsum collection however with it being so fantastically strong I would be doing regardless of them paying my wages.
The collection is based on the notion of The Gentleman and his polite and well mannered nature. The various ensembles from Chief creative officer Christopher Bailey most definitely lived up to the title.
A concotion of town and country the collection sees a medley of fabrics from rustic tweeds to lush velvets in the form of body skimming suits and various outerwear styles - almost everything ive ever wanted from life really.
Slight hints of drole with a nod to rural England came in the form of animal heads embroidered onto shirts and appearing on the end of some magnificent umberellas.
One cannot wait to take advantage of employee discount!

P.S. Not normally one to end on a sour note but one item Mr Bailey can keep for now is the cropped puffer, a silhouette we first saw in Burberry Prorsum SS12, most definitely not to my taste, perhaps I'll warm to them.

It's quite some time ago now that I first saw the work of Ted only because the lovely Manchester based artist/illustrator asked to sketch myself.
Her weapon of choice is the pencil and she's rather bloody good with one. The works below come from her Portraits series, the series I am featured in, but she also has some rather good fashion illustrations too and the best part is it's all for sale should you like her work as much as I do.

With a new year upon us I feel it is nigh time that I begin looking forward therefore with this post I put to bed Autumn/Winter 2011-12.
So as a fond farewell to a season full of fantastic tailoring and for those that haven't yet seen it I introduce one of my favourite collections from the aforementioned season brought to us by a Mr Umit Benan.
Inspired by fictional character Patrick Batemen from Easton Ellis' American Psycho, (which just so happens to also be one of my favourite books) the collection is a mix of incredibly sharp coats and jackets softened through his implementation of pleated trousers and paperbag waists.

With the recent inclement weather we've been experiencing here in Blighty it has been quite necessary to wrap oneself up tight. That I can manage, but there is one part of winter dressing that leaves me quite literally cold; it is the simple skill of wearing a hat. The sad fact of the matter is I just cannot carry one off.
It may have something to do with the large circumference of my cranium but whatever the reason I just look ridiculous in one however that isn't to say you gentlemen will too.

Normally being one of the first to throw up the tinsel, deliver the cards and generally embrace the spirit of Christmas, I cant help but feel a distinct lack of festive cheer this year on my part. Perhaps it is the realisation that I am indeed no longer a child but I haven't had so much as a glimmer of merriment for the coming month.

The brief we were given was to produce some images based on the tag line 'London Girl' and so I decided to create a Soho/Ritz hybrid and the images that follow are the result.

Tipping The Velvet

Tis no secret round these parts that I have rather a soft spot for one of autumn/winter 2012's fabrics of the moment; velvet.
There's just something undeniably lustrous about it, so my recommendation gentlemen is that you rapture your wardrobe into a higher state of elegance by adding this opulent material to your sartorial repertoire.
One doesn't have to be as bold as seen in the Lanvin and Etro shows but can opt for more subtle, darker shades a la Alexander McQueen.

Chad Wys - Artist

The very same acquaintance that introduced me to the works of Dan Hillier has now introduced me to yet another exquisite artiste; a Mr Chad Wys.
The American based conceptual artist who's work deals with deconstruction and objectification has taken the notion of Regency/Victorian portraits and presented them in a truly modern reimagining.
It is this combination of old meets new that enamours me every time.
The examples selected below come from his Nocturne series 1 & 2 and are particular pieces I find hauntingly beautiful and rather sad.

Today's post, dear readers, is in celebration of the most wonderful variety of knitted pullover and my jumper of choice - The Turtle neck.
The simple turtle neck has been going through somewhat of a renaissance as of late and what started out as seafarers wear is now an elegant alternative to a shirt and tie.
It's not unusual to see a sporadic turtle neck here and there when the cooler months are upon us however this Autumn/Winter season we seem to have them in abundance; from Topman and Zara on the high street to Balenciaga and Dior on the runways one is definitely spoilt for choice.
I like to wear a lovely fine knitted one under a blazer however one can opt for chunkier versions under a jacket should the climate require it.
When selecting which turtle necks to feature I tried to opt for those in a bolder colour, I'm so terribly bored by monochrome at the moment.

Tartan Reigns A/W 2011-12

My love affair with tartan, and his equally as admirable sibling plaid, began many years ago when at the tender age of 16 I bought my first tartan tie, a bond formed that day which lead to the plethora of tartan trousers, jackets & suits that now call my wardrobe home.
So of course I was elated to see the continuation of these wonderful fabrics in this autumn/winter's collections.
The pattern was for the most part wielded in two ways; either to make a masculine, rebellious statement or as the embodiment of aristocratic luxury; both we can agree are fantastically effective as can be seen in the pick of DandyFantastic favourites below.

Vile Bodies

Having long been a fan of The Bright Young People of the 1920's naturally Vile Bodies was high up on my list of books to read and last month I finally got my hands on a copy.
The 1930 novel by author Evelyn Waugh satirises a particular decadent young contingent of London society that emerged in the years following the first World War.
Often considered one of Waugh's lesser offerings I happened to enjoy it immensely and regularly became envious of what wonderful monikers the characters were given.
Agatha Runcible, Miles Malpractice and Archie Schwertz all make Martin Metcalf sound rather drab.
As with all my book posts I have included a favourite passage below so please do have a read through and pick up the book if you can.

I was recently introduced, by an acquaintance, to the marvelous works of a Mr Dan Hillier; to which I was immediately spell bound.
With touches of surrealism and a heavy dose of the Victorian Macabre his work is dark and hypnotic yet with slight dashes of humour in the form of animal headed aristocrats.
One might say I've found a perfect match for my artistic tastes and am positively green with envy at his talent.
I have cadged a couple of images from his blog to show you but I do urge you to peruse the site as there are a myriad more.

In my on going quest for good taste and great style one tries to avoid being swept up by the whims of fashion however Autumn/Winter 2011-12 shall be seeing one trend that I simply cannot ignore.
Big, billowing, full trousers are back in vogue and I couldn't be happier. Harking back to Oxford bags of the 1920's the result is a much richer looking ensemble.
Though I doubt this signals the death of the skinny silhouette and I can't see it being embraced by many it is a bandwagon I shall be gladly jumping on.

Dandy Fantastic Styling #2 - Final University Campaign

With one's final university project we were given complete free reign to do as we wish.
With many people expecting me to produce a marketing campaign for some fantastic new tailor or gentleman's supply shop I decided I wanted to produce something a little more out of character.
The result was a make up range for transvestites from the brand Illamasqua, below is a snippet from the collection's brochure and some of its promotional imagery.

"Gender Divine; a glorious fusion of club kids, performance artists, cultural practices, foreign worlds and historical figures brought all together into one esoterically glamorous, gender blurring collection"

As of last Friday I can now officially add BA to the end of my title after graduating with a degree in Fashion Brand promotion with Journalism. A particularly joyous occasion you may think but I am now left with an overwhelming sense of what the hell does one do now.
So if any lovely employers happen to read this humble blog of mine, be a sport and give me a job.

Above is a picture from the day with my twin sibling. I lay awake many hours debating what to wear but settled on a navy DB blazer with cream chinos and vintage Pierre Cardin shoes with all the usual accoutrement coloured socks, tie clip, pocket square etc.

Style Icons

In a recent job application one was put to the task of compiling a list of the top 5 male style icons of all time, narrowing down the plethora of stylish men to choose from through the ages was quite a task and so those settled upon were gentlemen who I find personally admirable, whose style doesn't only come from what they wear, men who have substance as well as style.

1. Noel Coward
The20th Century playwright was chosen due to his inimitable elegance. there is no one that can pull of a smoking jacket quite like he could, furthermore he's the only person who could rival Marlene Dietrich at making a cigarette look fantastically mondain.

2. Hamish Bowles
I chose the European editor of American Vogue for his distinct combination of the incredibly sophisticated with many an outre flourish. He is also the owner of an enviable collection of historic tailoring.

3. Cary Grant
This gentleman is pretty much a staple of stylish male lists, however it is rightly so. Most noted for his double breasted suit and subtle tie, a relatively simple combination but very stylish none the less.

4. Lapo Elkann
The Fiat brand manager was chosen due to his fearlessness when it comes to dressing; he isn't afraid to push the boundaries and break sartorial rules whilst still managing to always look wonderfully refined.

5. Candy Darling
A peculiar choice for a male style list you might think however Candy Darling wasn't chosen for his/her aesthetic but more for their sheer dedication to their look. Since becoming muse for many an artist, Candy embodied an attitude that transcends gender and will never go out of style.

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol

Love him or detest him, one could never say Andy Warhol was boring. So upon beginning to read 'The Philosophy of...' one thought one was in for a rather interesting journey. The book indeed delivered on this.

It is often vacuous and often absurd much like it's author, however despite it's possible shortcomings it gives a fantastic insight into the cognition of a 20th century icon.
The following passage is one I particularly like and is edited from a conversation appearing in the book's opening chapter.

"Nothing is missing. It's all there.
The affectless gaze. The diffracted grace.
The bored languor. The wasted pallor
The chic freakiness, The basically passive astonishment, the enthralling secret knowledge.
The chintzy joy, the revelatory tropisms, the chalky, puckish mask, the slightly Slavic look.
The childlike, gum chewing naivete, the glamour rooted in despair, the self admiring carelessness, the perfected otherness, the wispiness, the shadowy, voyeuristic, vaguely sinister aura, the pale, soft spoken magical presence, the skin and bones.

I was introduced to this wonderful blog by a wonderful friend an awful long time ago but for some reason I had completely forgotten all about it.
The recent reacquaintance has only furthered my love for the work Mr Ari Seth Cohen produces.
More often than not in this country we have a tendency to simply dismiss the more senior amongst us but his blog proves the best things only get better with age; wine, cheese and style.
It is a lovely homage to the truly stylish who just happen to be in their autumnal years.
It also gives me hope that some kindly stranger may still want to take my picture once the wrinkles set in.

DAKS Got The Knack.

It is the dancing scene from Jean Luc Goddard's "Bande a Part", highly influential on Tarrentino's Pulp Fiction, it is the story of two crooks who persuade the impressionable young Odile to aid them in a robbery.

Fretting Over Ferre

Upon commencing with a late night peruse of various online publications I came across Gianfranco Ferre's Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 collection here and was immediately racked with anguish at the thought of it not being in my life.

It's wonderfully elegant and fantastically stylish and I advise you inspect further.

If any philanthropists happen to be reading this I wouldn't say no to a charitable donation in the form of one midnight blue velvet jacket or double breasted suit.

In today's world of sweat pants and hoodies I believe the tie receives a rather undeserved bad rap, too stuffy for some and often seen as nothing more than office de rigeur but I believe there's a tie for every occasion, formal or informal.

From classic stripes and tweeds to the more modern knitted varieties, there's a plethora of ties on the market so to help those getting in a twist about their ties here's a select few which I believe are particularly fantastic.

Once again I find myself apologising for an inordinate leave of absence. Quite perturbedly, one has been suffering from the malfunctions of modern technology.

But whilst I have a stolen moment on a friends laptop I thought I would share with you the fruits of my latest brief. Twas an image making brief based on 2011/12 trends, where I took inspiration from possibly the greatest protagonist of the surrealist movement, Salvador Dali.

Dunhill Spring/Summer 2011

As summer draws to a close I thought I would commence a little bijoux retrospect of sorts for one or two of the fantastic collections this past season has given us.
First on the agenda is Kim Jones with his wonderfully cut collection for Dunhill.
To put it as simply as possible the show was notably clean: The colour palette was clean, awash with both deep and fresh shades of blue, grey and ivory: The silhouette was clean, featuring mostly simple, straight lines: The models where clean, all fresh faced with slicked back hair.
The designs where classic combinations of shorts and sweaters, jackets and trousers with a waistcoat or jacket thrown in sporadically, nothing was particularly groundbreaking but then that wouldn't be Dunhill.
Fortunately the whole affair was spared from becoming too austere by just a couple of genius touches, for as the old adage goes 'The devil is in the detail'.
From the ultra-luxe fabrics to the glimpses of plaid to the jacquard handkerchiefs and bow ties, the collection became a crisp and sophisticated array of ensembles fit for any modish mondain as opposed to a set of drab and stuffy office de rigeurs., which it ran the risk of becoming.
On a personal level one was happy to see the continuation of double breasted jackets although apparent in a slightly more outré imagining, as can be seen in photograph 2. It is also of interest to note we also see, on a couple of the outdoor jackets, the trompe l'oeil contouring that was prevalent in a number of Autumn/Winter collections.
To conclude I shall simply say Bravo Mr Kim Jones and leave you to peruse the rest of the show.

Just thought I'd bring to your attention that the wonderful online menswear magazine, We're Worth It Too, recently celebrated it's 10th issue, quite a feat when you consider it is all put together in it's creator's spare time. An abundance of blood, sweat and probably tears have gone into it's creation over the years so I highly recommend one would benefit from perusing its pages.
Plus I may also have contributed a little to the current edition, So yet another reason to take a look.

Situated somewhere near the top of my broad repertoire of musical interests sits Antony Hegarty and his musical ensemble Antony & The Johnsons so upon the announcement of a new album one was positively beside ones self. The new album entitled 'Swanlights' will be released on October 4th via The Secretly Canadian music label and will be released alongside a special edition featuring a 144 page book containing the musical virtuoso's paintings, collages, photography and writing.

He is certainly not to everyone's tastes however he is an artist I would recommend to anyone and am unashamedly anticipating hearing more from.

For now here's one of his previous productions, the emotive 'Hope There's Someone'.

The Iconic shoe Brand a few days ago reached the grand old age of 50 and to celebrate they are rereleasing their original 1460 so with that in mind I thought we could take a look at a few of my favourite pairs of this sturdy stylish foot apparel available at the moment.

Classic Brogue detailing meets sturdy rubber soles, perfect for those blue collar gentlemen perhaps.

Tartan-tastic, these ones speak for themselves.

This delightful piece of footwear is born from the merging of two classic 80's shoes. Dr Martens and Tassel Loafers.

Here we have Marten's Morton (desert boot-esque) shoe, showing they can still be right on trend.

And one for the ladies, the antithesis of sturdy boot and floral print makes for a pretty but don't mess with me finish.

Dries Van Noten Autumn/Winter 2010/2011

The next autumn/winter collection comes from Dries Van Noten, a designer I hold in high esteem who proved with his last collection just why he is so deserving of being held with such regard.

Contrast, contrast, contrast was the zeitgeist of the day of the show, whether it be patterns, colours, fabrics or trimmings almost everything was set in opposition yet nothing looked out of place, truly a testimony to the creative acumen of Van Noten.
Amongst a plethora of exquisite designs it was perhaps the unconventional blazers that peaked my interest the most whether it was the nostalgia laced, plaid, double breasted number or the purple and blue stripe, sleeveless creation each piece amplified the eccentric charm.
The silhouette was brought in at the waist due to prevalent belting in the collection, being seen on numerous ensembles the best of which was a caramel coloured trench featuring heavy contouring, creating a trompe l'oeil effect.
To conclude, in my humble opinion this collection is the conception of a true design genius.

Etro Autumn/Winter 2010

As winter draws to a close I thought I would take an opportunity to look back at the past season and muse over some of my favourite collections.

First on the agenda is Etro's Autumn/Winter collection which drew inspiration from a hunt in the woods, with a synopsis as such, one would struggle not to like it.
For a good part the colour palette came in adumbral hues of navy, black and brown but where cut through with bursts of lambent purple, mustard and sage amongst others.
Like previous Etro collections, this was effortlessly stylish with just a slight hint of droll created through the eclectic use of plaid, quilting, tweeds, owl prints and paisley accents.
The eccentric mien is continued in the collections key items: over sized, chunky knit scarves, floppy top hats, knee high contrast spats and a couple of spectacular pairs of jodhpurs, which I most enviably would like to have in my possession. Contained in the collection where also much more wearable items such as the skinny trousers, fur hooded tops and some rather well cut tailoring.
Hence yet again Etro succeeded in creating a wonderful compilation of classic come modern menswear which certainly didn't disappoint me and in turn I hope hasn't disappointed you.

On January 24th 2009 London saw a legion of tweed clad cyclists taking to its streets in the very first, great Tweed Run. In March of this year hundreds of enthusiasts shall once again don their argyle, brogues, pipes and flat caps to take a jaunt around the country's capital and of course stop off for a quintessentially British tea break.
Last years event evidently struck a chord with a great many people, tweed runs have since appeared in cities worldwide, Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney and Tokyo have all held their own, it is heartening to see this great British institute being celebrated on an international level.
Never being one for physical exertion one might think I would be perturbed at the mere thought of breaking a sweat riding aback a bicycle however this is one of few physical activities I could quite happily consider partaking in, so on that note its time for me to start digging out the plus fours.

Now that all the festivities and over indulgences have been put to bed I can once again start blogging.

I'm sure we've all had a bit of a flutter in the sales, I know I most certainly have, between the clothing and the eau de colognes I'm practically impoverished but perhaps my favourite and probably most sober purchase was that of a rather splendid book entitled 'Sharp Suits' at the nominal price of £12.99.
Written by Eric Musgrave, it is an illuminating exploration into a most masculine form of dress, 'Sharp Suits' charts the history of the suit from 9th century bespoke to the 20th century commercial with photographs of some impeccably outfitted men along the way.
To summarise it is an encyclopedia of good taste and a publication no self respecting dandy should be without.

In the last hour I have stumbled across a website which has quite possibly restored my faith in the human race and I say this without an ounce of hyperbole.

The website in question is www.lovethemo.co.uk, established by Wilkinson Sword, this is a website so noble and so good in its intent but still so utterly genteel, that it urges the gentlemen of Great Britain to cultivate there facial hair in the aid of prostate cancer and other male health concerns.
It offers practical planning, styling and shaving advice and even has a frequently asked questions page, it truly is an invaluable resource for any man thinking of decorating his upper lip.

Art Of The Trench

The trench coat, a classic piece of british outerwear since the first world war. Stylish and practical, A staple in every gentlemans wardrobe.

Burberry, A house that understands this perfectly and is famous for it's trench coat appreciation, have put together a rather fantastic celebratory website called artofthetrench.com, with some wonderful street style photographs being taken by legendary blogger Scott 'The Sartorialist' Schuman, it aims to bring people together through their love of this iconic garment.

Otto Dix

The Weimar Era - the period of pre-war Berlin dating from 1919 and an era I increasingly find myself being drawn to, it was a time of great art, music and self expression.
Otto Dix , one of the more prevelant artists from the era and a now particular favourite of mine, was a painter and printmaker noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of Weimar society and of the brutality of war. He was one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) Movement.
So here in it's full visual splendour is a taster of his work.

A little strong a title you may think however that's exactly what Lily Allen has done for the latest edition of i-D magazine, the cockney belle bared all in their August Geeks issue, stating she likes sex but isn't so keen on drugs anymore, well we'd never have guessed as she provocatively poses in a number of the photographs shot by Alasdair McLellan, who has also shot for Vogue, V and Pop to name a few.

Normally this kind of scant lack of clothing would be an affront to my delicate sensibilities, however in this case and in the name of art I say brava.
